The journey of Caribbean Fashion Week has not been an easy one since inception. From the challenges of molding a professional industry out of something relatively unstructured and non-existent they have come a far way to now celebrating their 10th anniversary. An achievement which has seen marvelous changes in the lives of many young men and women, now turned world class super models, and the generation of more business for designers and brands throughout the Caribbean.
Notwithstanding, 2010 brought its own great challenges. If the global economic climate was not enough, this year they had to contend with a national civil conflict. Just a few weeks before the scheduled event images of dead bodies, armed military forces and distressed civilians on the streets of Jamaica's capital (Kingston) flooded the international press. This inevitably caused some distress for the event, delaying it by aprox a week. Attendees were undoubtedly lost, yet the show did go on and surpassed skepticism.
Perhaps the celebration was not on the scale one would have hoped, being the 10th anniversary. But we were all happy to see our models return to their home stage after a successful year overseas. In particular Sedene Blake, who recently featured on the cover of Vogue Italy, along with other favourites such as Jaunel, Nell, Jeneil, Carla, Nicole and not to mention Oraine Barrett. Guest artists such as Johnny Gill , Katai Cadet, Gramps and Una Morgan performed. There were also a lot of debut designers with surprising collections and a new addition to the show, Andrea E Wilson, world renowned stylist.
