Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith Premier Karate Kid
August 10, 2010
Seldom do movie premiers resemble a family outing as with the star-studded Smith family. Recently Jada, Willow, Jaden, Will Smith along with Jackie Chan attended the premier of Karate Kid.
Its obvious that the Smith family are a far cry from average, so its easy to forgive them for minor eccentricities such as Willow's punk hairstyle. Apart from that the Smith family looked like any ordinary family would standing on the red carpet with hundreds of flashing cameras and screaming fans.
Both Smith children seem to have taken on the family acting gene. Their screen performances so far have eluded to the fact that they can hold their own in Hollywood without riding on their parents achievements. At 11 years of age and already staring in his second blockbuster, Jaden Smith has taken his career to a whole new level ahead of Will Smith who started at age 17.
Karate Kid is the remake of Ralph Macchio's 1984 cult hit. Yet awaiting its debut in several countries, Karate Kid has already become a huge box office hit. The idea to remake the movie with Jaden as the lead character (Dre) came from Will Smith. Jada Pinkett Smith also shared equally in the producer role along with Jerry Weintraub and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter. The film carries all the hallmarks of the original classic with slight modifications and modernizations. Whereas Karate Kid originated in Japan, this version is based in Beijing, China and other cities, also featuring Chinese Kung Fu.
Similar to the classic narrative, a mother and son migrates to China from the US. We witness the hopeless victimization of the son who is out of his league physically, culturally and numerically when faced with native bullies; The trying scenes when Dre learns Kung Fu to defend himself and the nail biting tournament at the end. Mixed with a hint of romance and chivalry. The notorious "wax on, wax off"scenes from the original classic were replaced with "jacket on, jacket off". "hanging it up and taking it down". However, the modernized version clearly carries more flashy, stylistic and faster sequences than the original.
When speaking about the film young Jaden Smith is very candid, exerting great professionalism, soberness and clarity. Stating that he is confident in his acting abilities and takes his work very seriously. Jaden has already been named ShoWest's 2010 Breakthrough Male Star of the Year at the annual gathering of theater owners. With the possibilities of more awards on the horizon.
