Notwithstanding global economic challenges Caribbean Fashion Week 2009 was probably the best yet. According to Kingsley Cooper (President of Pulse Investments and chairman of CAFIF - Caribbean Fashion Industry Forum), new financial strategies were adapted. Whereas previously they sought select sponsors, this year they broadened their target sponsors and lowered their price margins.
However, no expense was speared in making CFW 2009 a star studded event with guest appearances from world renowned superstar Kelly Rowland (of Destiny's Child), rapper, actress and fashion mogul Eve, 'A' list Hollywood actress Nia Long; world renowned supermodels such as Jaunel McKenzie and Nell Robinson. Not to mention a host of local talents such as Cherine Anderson, Tami and Tessanne Chin.

"Working backstage with models and celebrities can be hectic because there are many persons and the job of the make-up artist not only involves getting them ready for the first walk down the runway, but constantly checking to ensure the look is consistent, that faces are matte, that lips are ready and also that each designer has the look that they require for their various collections". After a killer performance by Cherine Anderson who wooed audiences with favourite's such as "Shine Jamaica", "Talk if Yuh Talking" and "Coming Over Tonight"; Kelly Rowland took center stage after a brief introduction by Nia Long. Gracing the floor with sensual hip-hop moves and smooth vocal riffs, no doubt we were witnessing the performance of a founding member of Destiny's Child, one of the greatest female groups of all time.

A new signature feature at Caribbean Fashion Week, Art on the Run gave artists, designers and performing arts the rare opportunity to cross paths, resulting in an exciting amalgamation of futuristic, "outside the box" designs for the runway. Participants of this project were challenged to use less than 40% fabric, with a wide range of mediums such as natural fibre and hardware material.
In addition to this tailored collection, there were also gallery exhibits displaying a range of portraiture and landscape paintings, which utilized mediums such as oil and acrylic.

Ghanaian designer Nana Boteng, currently based in the USA made his first appearance at Cfw. Fierce, colourful, elegant and sharp are just a few words to describing his men's wear collection.
Where color was concerned the young designer was fearless in his demonstration of how masculine shades of pink, pastel colors and shocking green can complement the modern man.
At the end of his presentation Nana walked in energetically after the final models and threw his fists in the air in a triumphant gesture as audience applauded. |
